Relational Factors Overlooked by Employers

Employers are more likely to direct their focus on transactional factors when it comes to their employees whereas employees are far more likely to prioritise relational factors. This highlights an important component of employee retention; aligning the views and priorities of employers and employees.

What can easily be achieved by managers with minimal impact on time?

Demonstrating to your team that you value them can at first seem difficult to build into a busy working day. Simply providing acknowledgement of your team members in a random or ad hoc manner can begin to help with overcoming feelings of helplessness in a changing and challenging work environment. Showing a stronger sense of genuine conversational interest in the activities of team members outside of work can express that you value them as individuals.

Displaying a ‘real sense’ of appreciation for the work that people are completing by taking a small amount of time out during the day to do a novel activity that is not necessarily work related, such as a mindfulness exercise, act of self-care, or an interactive group activity, can show your team that their wellbeing matters to you.
