How Comfortable Are Managers in Giving Feedback?

Delivering negative feedback is a crucial but challenging aspect of leadership. While the importance of constructive criticism for personal and professional growth is widely recognised, the emotional effects it may have on leaders are frequently overlooked. A considerable number of managers – approximately 44% – experience feelings stress or difficulty when faced with the task of delivering negative feedback, despite the intention for betterment of the recipient.

Studies have found that for some leaders, the act of delivering negative feedback results in an immediate decline in their effectiveness. This decline manifested in various aspects of their leadership, impacting their ability to motivate teams, make sound decisions, and maintain overall productivity. This highlights the relationship between the emotional well-being of leaders and their capacity to fulfill their roles effectively.

By creating an environment where feedback is viewed as a tool for learning and development, rather than criticism, leaders may feel more supported in their role. Additionally, providing leaders with the necessary training and resources to navigate difficult conversations can help alleviate stress associated with giving negative feedback.
