Elements of high-impact and powerful feedback

Providing constructive feedback is an essential skill for leaders that can dramatically affect employee outcomes. Rather than feedback being discouraging for the receiver, presenting it in a way that will motivate change can often be challenging. Great feedback must provide opportunities for the employee to reflect, learn, and grow.

Enabling employee to develop and grow, rather than discussing what was wrong

Feedback is a time, as a leader, to share what you might see that would enable a team member to be great in their role that they might not see in themselves. Rather than focusing on mistakes they have made, helping them to see their areas of development as opportunities for advancement can greatly increase motivation and empowerment.

Openness from the feedback giver to promote engagement and connection

Displaying that you are comfortable presenting feedback and are open to discussion can assist in mediating a meaningful connection between leaders and their employees. This can guide receivers of feedback to facilitate change and encourage them to genuinely take on your advice and suggestions.

Actively involving the employee in the problem-solving process

Encouraging employee participation in the process of problem-solving can create a purposeful opportunity for self-development. Employees will be more likely to implement any necessary changes if they are defined and decided through a collaborative experience.
