The Top 5 Leadership Competencies According to Global Leaders

195 leaders around the world were asked to select which competencies were most important in making an effective leader. These were the top 5 themes in the responses. 

Demonstrating strong ethics and providing a sense of safety 

Leaders should be constructing a trusting environment in which their employees feel safe. High ethical and moral standards are crucial for a leader to communicate that they are committed to making fair decisions for their team and that they will honour their word. This can in turn enhance employee productivity and engagement when employees feel more relaxed at work. 

Empowering self-organisation 

An effective leader should provide their employees with clear direction with with their work however they should organise their own time and be empowered to make decisions on their own. This has been found to improve levels of job satisfaction and commitment to an organisation. 

Openness to new ideas and fostering learning 

Leaders must not only be open to learning among their employees but also with themselves. Withholding judgement and considering all ideas can encourage employees to take chances and bring about positive change. This can establish a platform for enhancing collective intelligence and employees can learn from each other’s ideas and mistakes. 

Nurturing growth

When leaders commit to employee growth and development, employees are more likely to exhibit gratitude and loyalty. This can motivate them to be more productive and feel empowered to continue expanding their abilities. Great leaders should advocate for their team and support their training and development. 

Cultivating a sense of connection and belonging 

Creating open and frequent channels for communication helps to build a strong foundation for connection. It is also important for leaders to create a sense of collective success and failure as a team, which can help employees feel as though they belong to a group with a unified purpose.
